MANTECA HISTORY
Manteca's city mail is to be delivered by the Post Office in 1949
Maro Litchfield, who has served the town so well as city marshal since incorporation, has resigned. A small salary resulted in his resignation from the office and he told the city trustees that he did not like it. Joshua Cowell announced that F. M. Roundtree would assume the office.
All plans have been finalized for the joint annual dinner for the chamber of commerce and Lion's Club to be held at Hotel Manteca tonight at 7 p.m. L. M. Morris of Modesto will be the main speaker for the evening, and Dr. A. J. Whitaker will serve as toastmaster.
As of last Thursday noon, A. H. Veith had handed his gavel over to his successor, F. Y. Kraft. He commended the board and members for their loyalty over the past year and pledged the same level of cooperation for the incoming president.
The postal authority has not yet approved city mail delivery for Manteca, however an inspector has recommended it. However, we cannot provide any further information here until the department advises Postmaster Luck to begin the delivery service.
The Board of Trustees discussed Monday night how to deal with the influx of new students in the elementary schools. According to Neil Hafley, superintendent, another new school would be needed before long. Despite the fact that he could get along without double sessions one more year, he would need more classrooms after that.
The MRPS Hall hosted the Jaycees 21 distinguished awards banquet Saturday night, honoring two of the highest honors the community can bestow upon its citizens. Managing director at Bank of America, John Gatto, was named Man of the Year. Awarded Outstanding Young Man of the Year is Duane Martin of McFall, Burnett and Martin LLP.
An old-fashioned Democratic rally undertones and some campaign rhetoric characterized Saturday's John McFall Recognition Dinner, held at St. Anthony's Parish Hall, which drew 780 friends of the former congressman. McFalls' homecoming and first public appearance since his defeat by Shumway on November 7 were not, as some in the audience expected, unhappy.
To widen and make safer the Highway 120 bypass, not just elected officials but the public will need to give their support and effort. A group of elected officials, businesspeople, and local residents gathered at Carls Jr. restaurant in Manteca last week to discuss the status of the bypass improvement project and discuss funding options. It was organized by Mayor Jack Snyder.
The double-edged sword of class size reduction and residential growth has become a double-edged sword for Manteca Unified School District. While new portables have been added, elementary schools are losing blacktop and playing field space because there are no open sites for putting new portables. An elementary school request for 12 portable classrooms was unanimously approved by the district's board Tuesday.
California will become a dry state in the coming months as near-record high temperatures are expected in January. It appears to be the driest January ever on the critical Sierra watershed. South San Joaquin Irrigation District General Manager Jeff Shields is getting nervous about it.
