The best things to do in Manteca, CA in 2023
Manteca is an interesting place. The city was originally named Joshua Cowell for its founder in 1861. A lot of townspeople were insistent on keeping both the town and the train station's name the same. Due to the existing Cowell Station in Manteca, Cowell wasn't considered.
As officials went to file the papers, a mistake was made in Monteca. As a result of the townspeople's liking for this rendition, and because refiling paperwork was often a hassle at that time, the name stuck. Butter or lard is called manteca by Spanish speakers south of the border. The easy-going energy seems to have endured through the generations.
